Aspiration pneumonia includes three distinct syndromes: chemical pneumonitis from aspiration of toxic materials, infection from aspiration of bacterial pathogens, and airway obstruction from aspiration of inert substances. In some cases, death is immediate from suffocation; in others, later complications are equally lethal. The authors discuss the distinctive features of these syndromes, the main steps in management, and the possibility of prevention.
