Post-polio syndrome

An emerging threat to polio survivors

Beginning in the 1980s, weakness, fatigue, and/or joint pain have increasingly been reported in patients who had polio 20 to 40 years previously. Known as post-polio syndrome, these sequelae can be demoralizing to patients who survived the acute illness. In this article, Dr Aston explores possible causes and describes current treatment of this debilitating disease.
