The sight of a young child struggling with the symptoms of a viral or bacterial respiratory infection or otitis media is distressing but quite common, and some of parents' favorite remedies, such as heated vapor and over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants, may not be helpful in this age-group. Dr Macknin summarizes current research on common respiratory problems in children and illustrates the importance of immediately securing the airway in epiglottitis by describing the death of George Washington.
