The number of Americans contracting malaria during overseas travel increased significantly in the last decade. This is due partly to increased travel but also to the fact that resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine phosphate has spread among malarious regions of the world. Dr Amin summarizes the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control for use of alternative chemoprophylactic measures and describes when they are appropriate.
