Drug abusers are heir to a number of ills, ranging from irregular menses in marijuana users to endocarditis in parenteral drug abusers. Primary care physicians encounter substance abuse often but may not always recognize its medical complications. What conditions signal the presence of abuse, and which complications need to be ruled out in known addicts? The answers to these and other questions can be found in this review of the well- and little-known complications that can occur with substance abuse.
