A little prevention can spare patients much debility. This is particularly true of viral hepatitis, which often resists treatment. Dr Dindzans describes the current recommendations of the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee of the Centers for Disease Control on the use of immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine and the avoidance of high-risk situations to prevent infection with the various hepatitis viruses. He also summarizes the steps to take after exposure.
