What can primary care physicians do to protect themselves against litigation and still offer the best possible care to their patients with breast symptoms? The authors describe the basic concepts of medical malpractice and how they relate to claims against physicians for failing to diagnose breast cancer. Recommendations are provided for securing a useful informed consent and reducing liability risks through patient education, careful documentation, and a clear follow-up plan.
