Patients with delirium or acute psychosis can tax the abilities of almost any physician. A complete medical evaluation of the affected patient and clear diagnostic thinking on the part of the physician are prerequisites to construction of a management plan that allows safe, effective sedation and definitive treatment. Drs Westreich and Bialer describe the use of environmental manipulation, physical restraint, and medication for acutely agitated patients.
