One of the disadvantages of “modern” living has been the refinement of food-processing methods. Many years ago, industrialized countries largely abandoned use of the whole grain in cereal products and, as a result, greatly diminished the amount of fiber in the diet. Drs Elfrink and Miedema discuss one consequence of a low-fiber diet—diverticular disease—and present an overview of therapeutic approaches.
