Non-insulin-dependent (type II) diabetes mellitus is common among Americans and causes significant morbidity. However, it can often be safely and inexpensively controlled with exercise, weight loss, and dietary adjustment. Physicians play an important part by individualizing nonpharmacologic treatment and by encouraging their patients. Dr Blake summarizes the dividends to be gained by following such regimens and provides useful exercise and nutrition prescriptions.
