Tetanus is a tare but serious illness: Treatment is difficult and mortality high. However, prevention through immunization is easy. In the United States, tetanus affects mainly elderly people, many of whom are unaware of the importance of immunization and are not adequately protected. The authors encourage primary care physicians not only to keep their young patients' tetanus immunizations current but also to take an aggressive approach toward prevention of tetanus in their older patients.
