As public awareness of the AIDS epidemic has increased, athletes, coaches, and trainers have become more concerned about their risk of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In this article, Dr Johnson describes the risk of HIV transmission in the sports setting, summarizes the effects of exercise on the development of AIDS, and provides guidelines for physicians who deal with athletes and other sports personnel.
