The widespread use of aggressive treatment has increased in-hospital survival of post-myocardial infarction patients in recent years. However, patients with continued ischemia or ventricular dysfunction, or both, are at high risk for re-infarction. Armed with an understanding of how to assess risk in their postinfarction patients and a rational treatment strategy, primary care physicians can be instrumental in working toward the best possible outcome. Dr Smith summarizes results of recent trials using various therapies in survivors of acute infarction.
