A major goal of treatment after myocardial infarction is to control arrhythmia and thus improve long-term prognosis. Fortunately, noninvasive methods are available to evaluate cardiac function and assess the risk of recurrent infarction or sudden death. Dr Mattioni describes the risk factors for life-threatening complications after infarction, methods used to diagnose their presence, and approaches that may diminish their effects.
