The mainstay of therapy for osteoarthritis is still nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); however, concerns have been raised about the agents' effects on cartilage metabolism and joint loading. Dr Schnitzer comments on the use of NSAIDs versus simple analgesics and discusses other treatment approaches currently available or under investigation.
