Nearly everyone has experienced the pressure and pain caused by blocked and infected sinuses. The condition is so common that it is easy to forget how severe complications may be when infection extends to surrounding structures. Because of the location of the sinuses, orbital or intracranial spread may occur, which can be life-threatening. The authors describe the use of antibiotics and other methods to arrest acute sinusitis. They also summarize potential complications when acute sinusitis is not resolved and discuss how to diagnose and treat such complications.
