The key to successful abortive treatment of tension-type headache and migraine is knowing how to use analgesics, antiemetics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ergotamine derivatives, and narcotics appropriately. In addition to offering practical guidelines for pharmacotherapy with these agents, Dr Silberstein discusses avoidance of headache triggers, methods of nonpharmacologic intervention, use of prophylactic medication, and patient education.
