When elevated liver enzyme levels are found in asymptomatic patients, the differential diagnostic considerations are broad. A carefully taken patient history, together with the pattern of liver enzyme abnormalities (as discussed in the article beginning on page 113), helps in narrowing the diagnostic possibilities and in directing the search. In this article, Dr Herrera discusses evaluation according to type of liver injury—hepatocellular or cholestatic.
