Alcoholism is estimated to affect up to 10% of the elderly. Unfortunately, alcohol abuse often goes undetected in older patients because its effects are attributed to aging or to medical conditions common in this age-group. Dr Gupta suggests ways primary care physicians can improve history taking and evaluation to increase early detection of alcoholism in older patients.
