Patients with gradual onset of decreased tolerance to exercise, fatigue, and breathlessness on exertion may mistakenly attribute these symptoms to deconditioning, aging, or obesity. However, they may be early symptoms of mitral regurgitation accompanying mitral valve prolapse. Both conditions worsen over time. Dr Sorrentino describes auscultatory and echocardiographic diagnosis of the disease and follow-up for common complications.
