Aortic regurgitation can have serious consequences. Acute disease requires emergency surgery with its attendant risks. Chronic disease may cause irreparable heart damage before symptoms appear and surgery can be performed. Dr Follman describes the differences between acute and chronic aortic regurgitation and discusses diagnosis and management of this multifaceted disorder.
