Making sense of hypothyroidism

An approach to testing and treatment

Evaluation of hypothyroidism can involve a confusing array of test results and nonspecific symptoms. The good news is that a single test, the sensitive thyrotropin assay, can simplify evaluation and management. In this article, the authors explain the importance of various thyroid function tests in diagnosis, screening, and monitoring of treatment. Evaluation and management of subclinical hypothyroidism and euthyroid sick syndrome also are discussed.
