Men who are testosterone-deficient may experience a decrease in bone-mineral density that is similar to that which occurs in women who become estrogen-deficient after menopause. Dr Niewoehner discusses factors that cause men to reach a comparatively low peak bone mass, that accelerate bone loss, and that inhibit bone formation. Treatment regimens with testosterone replacement, use of other hormones, and supplementation with calcium and vitamins are summarized.
