Tips to rapidly diagnose treatable causes

Signs and symptoms of viral meningitis are usually quite nonspecific. They may resemble characteristics of bacterial, parasitic, viral, or fungal infection as well as systemic or malignant disease or use of certain drugs or vaccines. Although viral meningitis is usually benign, ruling out potentially serious infection is critical. The authors summarize laboratory findings that help identify viral meningitis, typical causes, and the many disorders to consider in differential diagnosis.
