Nursing home-acquired infection is common and causes a significant number of deaths, so it is not surprising that antibiotics are prescribed often for nursing home residents. Unfortunately, many of these prescriptions are unnecessary. Dr Katz discusses ways of eliminating inappropriate use of antibiotics in nursing homes and addresses such practical matters as what to look for during examination of a nursing home resident for possible infection and how to decide whether a patient with infection should be transferred to an acute care facility.
