Allergy to insect stings

A need for improved preventive management

Specific guidelines for prevention and treatment of allergic reactions to insect stings have emerged from research studies conducted over the past two decades. Most advice has been directed toward allergists, however, and several recent studies have identified major shortcomings in preventive management of anaphylaxis in patients who present to emergency departments and other primary care facilities. The authors of this article summarize current knowledge on insect sting allergy and review accepted guidelines for management.
