Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is not unerring as a diagnostic tool in patients with thyroid nodules, but study has shown that its use has strikingly decreased the necessity for surgery and has almost doubled the number of cancers found at operation. Dr Wool examines the application of the procedure for thyroid nodules and presents a comprehensive algorithm for diagnosis and treatment of these common lesions.
