Prostatitis is four diseases rather than one, and successful management depends on accurately classifying the condition according to systemic signs and symptoms and the results obtained by examination of expressed prostatic secretions and urine cultures. In this article, Dr Moul summarizes the characteristics of each type of prostatitis, with a special focus on diagnosis and treatment by the primary care physician.

Judd W. Moul, MD Dr Moul is a major in the US Army Medical Corps; attending urologist-oncologist, Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Washington, DC; and associate professor of surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Bethesda, Maryland. He is also director, Center for Prostate Disease Research, a Department of Defense research program involving WRAMC, USUHS, and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
