Being able to walk without assistance is integral to preserving quality of life. Losing this ability in later years as a result of ischemic arterial lesions in the legs can be devastating. Primary care physicians are in a good position to detect early problems and advise patients on how to improve the condition or prevent progression. In addition, primary care physicians are an important part of the team needed to manage the most severe, limb-threatening cases.
