Why is differentiating COPD from asthma important?

There is considerable overlap in features and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Why, then, is it necessary to distinguish between the two? As the authors explain, the two diseases have different causes, risk factors, and clinical courses. Correct diagnosis, described in this article, allows physicians to take measures that reduce exacerbations and to accurately assess progress.
