Antibiotic-induced diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis

Diarrhea associated with antibiotic therapy is common and usually self-limited. However, pseudomembranous colitis may develop in some patients and, if left untreated, may progress to severe illness and secondary bacterial septicemia. Dr Jacobs examines the causes and the clinical and laboratory features of the condition and recommends treatment regimens and methods of prevention.
