The value of intensified insulin regimens in slowing the progression of microvascular complications in patients with type I diabetes mellitus was demonstrated in the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial that ended last year. In this article, Dr Hollander, who was a member of the study's multicenter research group, discusses the practical aspects of its key components and recommends methods of achieving glucose control in these patients.
