When diabetes and hypertension occur in the same patient, good control of both is needed to slow the progression of atherosclerosis and diabetic nephropathy. Antihypertensive agents must be selected with caution, as they may have side effects that are detrimental to diabetic patients. Drs Kochar and Kalluru review the types of hypertension that are common with diabetes and discuss both lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic therapy.
