Liver damage due to alcohol abuse is a severe condition often leading to cirrhosis or death. Unfortunately, the exact mechanisms involved are not well understood, and traditional treatment options have had limited success in improving morbidity and mortality rates. The authors of this article review recent studies on pathogenesis and discuss the pros and cons of current medical and surgical management.
