Because the pathoanatomy of shoulder problems in athletes is becoming better understood, a straightforward approach to diagnosis and treatment based on careful history taking and physical examination is feasible. Imaging techniques are greatly improved, but the clinical examination remains the keystone of management. Most shoulder problems are treated nonoperatively, and athletes are usually able to return to sports quickly and safely.
