Neuromuscular diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

When traditional testing fails to identify a cause of common gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea, the symptoms are sometimes lumped under a general diagnosis of functional or irritable bowel disease. However, the cause may be a well-defined organic condition, recognizable by its signs and symptoms and by results of more specialized testing. The authors describe mechanisms and characteristics of five neuromuscular diseases, as well as promising therapeutic agents.
