Physicians as well as patients tend to think of arthritis as a chronic, slowly progressive disorder. However, it can also first present as a new, acute symptom of infection, crystal disease, trauma, and many other joint and systemic diseases. Dr Schumacher summarizes how to narrow the possibilities with careful history taking and physical examination and what to do and not do until the diagnosis is established.
