Many persons with chronic hepatitis B have no signs of the illness, and it is important to identify those who are at risk for progressive liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Counseling by primary care physicians is recommended to help patients prevent transmission of the disease and to advise them of its long-term consequences. The author expresses hope that vaccination programs now in effect will bring this potentially lethal disease under control.
