In most states, an examination is required before school-aged youngsters are allowed to play recreational and competitive sports. Examining physicians are responsible for conducting a thorough yet cost-effective evaluation to detect disqualifying or restricting conditions. The authors summarize the aspects to consider during history taking and physical examination and provide guidelines approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
