Iron deficiency occurs in about 2% of US adults over age 50 and is a common cause of anemia. Opinions differ on the approach to evaluation of iron deficiency anemia in older patients, and studies have yielded conflicting results. What is the best diagnostic strategy? The authors review study results for the various options and recommend a stepwise, systematic approach to evaluation.
