HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common problems encountered in virtually every medical practice. Physicians and other healthcare providers are generally well aware of the management of STD syndromes, but they may be less prepared to prevent infection or reinfection. In this article, Dr Cohen reviews the mechanisms of HIV transmission and discusses preventive strategies already available to healthcare providers.
