Although it still occurs most often in seriously ill or injured patients, acute acalculous cholecystitis is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in outpatients who have an underlying chronic condition, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes. As Dr Chung points out, primary care physicians must be aware of this disease, because it can be fatal if not detected and treated promptly, and the population at highest risk—the elderly—is growing.
