Management of portal hypertension

Much of the morbidity and mortality associated with cirrhosis is due to portal hypertension, which frequently leads to esophageal hemorrhage and a neuropsychiatric syndrome known as hepatic encephalopathy. In the following article, Drs Shah and Kamath provide guidelines for preventing and managing these potentially life-threatening complications.
