Integration of Professional Skills in Medicine with Theoretical Knowledge

Abstract

An important distinction is made between the theory of medicine and the skills required for its practice. In the context of a fully integrated, problem‐based medical course this paper describes a method for the acquisition of the competences required for physical examination and medical interviewing as important aspects of professional skills in medicine. The identification of the component parts makes it possible to embark on a progressive programme of study and practice from the very beginning of the course, even before the students have acquired any substantial knowledge and understanding of disease processes. Indeed, such practical experiences can act as a focus for self‐directed study through stimulating a sense of inquiry and recognition of relevance.
