An Evaluation of Techniques for Analysing Small Group Work

Pages 64-66 | Received 22 Sep 1980, Published online: 03 Aug 2006

Abstract

Abstract: In higher education an interest in the analysis of teaching behaviour generally and the teaching of small groups in particular appears to be growing. It is often difficult, however, for the ‘lay’ practitioner to decide how and where to start such analyses. In the following paper, some of the better‐known Interaction Analyses are mentioned, together with an outline of the general problems associated with their use. One particular category system which has been found helpful over a fairly long period of experimentation is advocated. Problems in using the system are noted, as are its strengths for general, nonspecialist use.
