Abstract
A questionnaire survey of lecturers at a polytechnic into their attitudes towards independent learning packages in higher education obtained a response of 110 useful replies from a sample of 250. While a majority professed little or no experience of independent learning packages, the respondents as a whole expressed favourable attitudes towards them.
Respondents favouring the use of independent learning packages believed their use would bring lecturer and student into closer personal contact and thus enable individual needs and difficulties to be catered for more easily. Disapproves believed that the use of independent learning packages would reduce freedom and flexibility; make less use of the tutor's teaching skills; and reduce personal contact between lecturer and student.
Neither approvers nor disapproves would welcome the reduced personal contact associated with distance learning.
