Project U‐Train/CAL is an investigation by the Canadian Forces into the implications of Computer‐Assisted Learning (CAL) in technical training. One of the programme's objectives is the evaluation of NATAL, the NATiona\ Authoring ianguage. Canada's National Research Council (NRC), NATAL's design team, claims that the language could be easily learned and used by military technical instructors, who had little or no programming experience. This paper tests that claim. We will review our author selection and training process; state how they developed their courseware so that it could be authored and programmed; present a brief overview of NATAL; describe training problems and present some of the NATAL code; analyze the evolution of the instructors’ authoring‐programming skills; and discuss the role of the educational technologist and computer analyst in support of military instructors writing NATAL courseware.
