, &
Pages 29-40 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

The article presents a case study of an innovative course designed to provide training opportunities for academic staff who wish to acquire a more professional orientation towards their function as teachers. The course is provided entirely at a distance and leads to a Diploma and MSc with the possibility of continuation to MPhil/PhD. The case study describes the origins and current practices of the course and includes an independent evaluation of it. Finally, tentative conclusions are drawn, both concerning the use of distance study in academic staff training and in the way distance study quite generally can provide for autonomous learning
