Contributions of Educational Technology to Persons with Special Gifts and Challenges

Pages 166-172 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

Persons having diminished physical or mental functioning as well as those intellectually gifted tend to be handicapped by educational programmes made for students of average ability. Special education is concerned with the design of materials and techniques to facilitate the achievement of the distinctive learning objectives of exceptional students. Educational technology, defined as a systematic process of identifying problems in the domain of learning and the finding of solutions to these problems, has much to contribute to the expansion of educational opportunity too long denied to persons with special gifts and challenges. At its best, educational technology serves to make learning more enriched, valid, individualized, accessible, and economical. Greater efforts are needed to realize more fully the potential benefits of educational technology to special populations as well as to ensure that these benefits are distributed more widely.
