Abstract
Current debates about research methods in educational technology are out of place until relevant and potentially productive research questions have been identified. This article presents a definition of educational technology that points to three areas where important research questions lie. These are: research in instructional theory, decision‐oriented research, and research into instructional design procedures. Potentially useful types of research are described for each area, and examples of studies are given which mark the beginning of trends in the direction it is recommended that research should take.
